Florida’s
oldest citrus candy factory started way back in the 1920’s with two lady
friends named Miss Blodgett and Miss Stilman who lived in the tiny town
of Davenport, Florida.
The
two friends came up with the most unique recipe for making what they
called "Citrus Candies!" while operating a small TeaRoom in town. Before
long they had the original factory built near the TeaRoom. In 1931 Mr.
C.S. Taylor bought the business and started operating by the name
Taylor1s Tropical Sweets.
In the
early years, Mr. Taylor produced only a few types of citrus candy. Soon
though, new products were added and by 19561 over 80 varieties of sweets
were packaged and shipped!
Ready to
retire in 1971, Mr. Taylor sold his beloved candy factory to Mr. Paul
Webb and his wife, Nadine. This would be the Webb’s second candy
factory, as they started their first in the 1940’s in Mayville, New
York. Mr. and Mrs. Webb brought with them over a 100 chocolate and fudge
recipes, including the now famous Goat Milk Fudge recipe!
We are
proud to continue this little bit of Florida’s history. All of our
confections are made just the way they were originally, by hand. In
fact, we invite you to take a tour of the candy factory when you come to
Florida! You’ll see the original copper kettles, gas stoves, well-water
cooled tables, nougat mixer, and many more candy making equipment we
still use every day!
As you now
know, we also ship Florida’s finest citrus! What a wonderful gift for
Christmas, birthdays, or any special occasion a box of fresh, juicy
citrus would be! And you could always add some of Florida’s original
citrus candies to that order! |
